Blond, bruised and brutal - Bond is back
The praise and acclaim lavished upon Casino Royale since its theatrical release must have felt very satisfying for Messyrs Craig and Campbell. After months of negativity spewed from fans of a seriously flagging franchise, all of which was seemingly focused on the colour of our protagonist's hair, seeing the once proud James Bond spectacularly return to form was a treat.
From the woderfully nonsensical 'parkpour' opening via the bizarre credits, through to JB's torture. Casino Royale is 007 at its very best. The new man in balck (Craig) is in snarling form, mixing the masculinity and bravado synonymous with the character while lending him heart and humility. Casino shows James as fragile as we've ever seen im: tears, broken bones and a broken heart: however, don't let that fool you, this is also Bond at his most bloodthirsty. Quite how Casino Royale slipped thought the censors with only a 12-rating is astonishing.
Of course, Bond is only ever as good as his surroundings and, in Mads Mikkelson and Eva Green, Craig is ably assisted through Casino Royale's pacy two-and-a-quarter hours. Certainly, Mikkelson shines as the skeletal Le Chiffre bringing a despicable callousness to the role, and while the delectable Miss Green may stumble through some of the movie's weaker lines, her allure is undeniable.
Casino Royale is the best Bond in years, it's a shame then, that the extras package is a little thin on the ground - light-hearted featurettes don't compensate for the lack of an insightful commentary, but the movie itself more than makes up for it. Yes, the third act does threaten to pull evertything apart with its peculiar dialogue and unnecessary convultion, but Craig and Co pull through to deliver the perfect antidote to invisible cars and invincible Robert Carlyles. A triumph.
